Living a Creative Life

What does it mean to live a creative life? This means looking for new and better ways to live from day to day and year to year, rather than going along on automatic or doing what everyone else around you is doing.

It means employing that brainpower to more than simply paying the bills and winning those video games - and more than even creative thinking or writing.

For instance, the typical method of the problem of survival in a modern market is to get work. One's creative impulses are generally restricted to finding the right job and doing the things necessary or helpful to becoming hired. However a person that is living a more creative life would approach this in an entirely different manner. How? That is based on the individual, and we can not call it creativity if it is just a formula. However an example might give us an idea of a different way to think about this part of life.

Rather than looking for employment, a truly creative man could ask the question, Do I really need a job? or even the more fundamental question, Do I really want cash to live? These two questions will inspire different ideas about how to pay the bills and live in society - if they can be pursued with an open mind.

There are several approaches to make money that do not require employment by a company. I have met individuals who pay the rent accumulating returnable cans off the streets and from the garbage round the town they live in. I have had friends who made a living merely working for individuals in whatever capacity they wanted help, without ever needing to fill out a job application. Others sell their handicrafts in parks as well as on street corners in major cities. I read a book by a man who began investing in real estate directly out of high school (and even while in it), and never worked a job in his life. Day traders and artists and prospectors have all found methods to make money - sometimes more than a job would have paid.

So there are alternatives that might be explored. And as for the question about whether a man needs cash to reside in society, it does not have to indicate that cash is unimportant. It can lead one to question how much cash is really crucial, or rather how little is crucial if a person makes handling it and using it suitably a higher priority than making more of it. Some people can make less than $10,000 annually in the United States - poverty by normal measures - and still pay all the invoices - and travel the world once in a while. I have known some of the people.

There are many ways to live. A buddy once lived in a tent. Others I have met lived in a school bus in the desert. I've known people who take good care of other people's houses as a means to live without rent. Many people build their own homes and cottages. Others get occupations that comprise somewhere

to reside as part of the deal. Still others travel and work when they can, living in almost any way that they can as they go.

This challenging of common cultural premises does not mean that to be creative you have to live under a bridge and perform with trained raccoons in the streets for points. This type of questioning is just a beginning. Many quite creative and unusual folks live in ordinary houses and have regular occupations. But they're not there just because that's the way that it is designed to be. It just occurs to work nicely for them at the time. Several of these same individuals spent some part of their life traveling or volunteering in other countries or living on a boat perhaps. But when they live a creative life, they actually research all of the choices they've for jobs, houses, relationships, politics, and for every other part of their lives.
